“Crazy Uncle Bill” sent a slot car set for the big one’s birthday last month. We took advantage of the snow day to bust it out. It was a big hit :)
I never had a “real” slot car set as a kid, so this was a new experience for me too. I loved it, of course.

THE RUG. I had one as a kid. Wish I still did. I spent hours racing little cars around the roads.

I just bought that set to go with the Goodwill one. And a R8 safety car. I’ll be in trouble when it shows up and I’m out of town....

YES! I can’t believe I haven’t written about the set we got at christmas. I asked Oppo about them to see if there were any strong opinions.
My kids were actually maybe too excited about it, like jumping up and down constantly while trying to pay attention to the cars, then they go flying off. It doesn’t help I put it on top of our pool table, so they go
flying
off. I had to put up cardboard barriers which only work 70% of the time. Anyway, they discovered eventually that one of the cars is faster, and that causes arguments, naturally. I’m waiting a bit before busting it back out. I might get a couple different cars....

Indeed they are. The girls are loving them.

I can already tell that I'll be expanding this set. Emma skipped storytime to go race "with her stuffed animals"

I noticed that the Corvette is faster than the Ferrari. It feels like the Ferrari has more friction in it. Thankfully the girls have not noticed that.

IKEA has you covered. They're pretty cheap.

Theres something odd about a GTLM liveried Corvette racing a GTEAM liveried Ferrari. Could they have not at least used a GTEAM or GTEPRO livery on the Corvette?

It took them a few times using it before they noticed one car was faster. I can’t figure out why, but I haven’t messed with it in a few weeks.

I’m not up enough on my sports car game to know the difference.

Nice! I had a slot car track as a kid. In fact, it’s still in a closet in my parent’s house. I had a set of Indycar bodies (Arie Lu yendyk era Domino’s car, and a Rick Mears era Penzoil livery), and a couple of Days of Thunder era Stockcar bodies (Cole Trickle green/yellow and pink/white liveries).

Cool! I never had a proper slot car set as a kid, just a cheapie Tyco job. There were no hobby shops around, I don't think I even knew the good ones existed. I did have a totally BA Rick Mears Pennzoil liveried RC IndyCar though. Man, that thing was sweet.

I got my son that same Ikea rug. He’s more interested in playing dinosaurs on it than cars tho :-/.

My girls love dinosaurs and rescue bits as well. Those get a lot of action.

Mine were a Tyco set. I also had an Al Unser J/Valvoline RC car from that time period.

I had both my dad’s set from when he was a kid, and a TCR (slotless) set. I didn’t find either super exciting, for the most part with those layouts it seemed like there was never any reason not to just go full speed. To me the cars were cool, and that ozone smell is always interesting, but the actual racing didn’t hold much for me. I preferred video game racing, where there was actually stuff to do.

It’s a different rug, but I think there’s little question this is one of the best car mods ever conceived:

You can't just pin the throttle on this one.

Without a doubt. We had an early Thrustmaster PC wheel and pedals (via a gameport!) by around 1991/1992 . I was heavily into the original Papyrus Indycar Racing games, and then later on the first like three to five installments of the Need for Speed series. I think the Porsche unleashed NFS was probably the last one I played. Flight simulator and Simcity games were also always in the mix on the PC.
